(We)llness

December 23, 2022

Sprinting toward the finish line
wondering if the training was enough.
Breath is shallow,
Lungs shrivel and sink low,
Legs keep going
when the going gets tough.

There was a point
when the direction was unclear.
Running with one thought:
Keep moving forward
simply out of fear.

Fear was the coach
that did not yell.
It was the quiet voice
whispering so low
no one else can tell.

Instilling worries that flood my mind,
trickling down my body,
hiding in the crevices–
places only I can find.

In the deep, cold, dark
places that are avoided at all cost,
I found the will to push–
to persevere–
no matter what is lost.

The price is right,
and money is no object.
My team is what feels like home
despite it being easy to forget.

I came,
I came to,
I came to believe
that the choice to leave
is a choice to realize
that love is the prize.

Kailani NorwellKailani Norwell has a big mouth, a big heart, a big brain (metaphorically speaking), a big fucking ego, and an even bigger take on everything and anything. She has an unquenchable thirst for knowledge–to learn all that she can–and for personal development. While she dreams larger than life and encourages others to follow what puts sparks in their eyes, she typically plays incredibly small. She has indebted herself for America’s most expensive therapist–a bachelor’s and master’s degree in clinical psychology. Writing is her passion. It’s what ignites her soul. It is her most sincere form of expression. She doesn’t think she’s to write the next great American novel, but she’s to write something.
