To My Mother

January 5, 2026

I could’ve had anything

But I got you

And with you came

Baggage turned wisdom

Understanding and grace

Lessons

On how to have fun before

I was ready to learn

Patience until

I was ready

Your forever late bloomer

Too soft for this world

But too brave to go quietly

With you came

Late night apologies

Forgiving tears

Pleas to know how

To help me

Days I didn’t know

How to help

Myself

Patience while neither of us knew

Beauty and strength in womanhood

Never spoon fed

Always simply offered

With no unnecessary apologies

Only those grounded in truth

With you came

Truth

Hard truth

Soft truth

Profound truth

Grace-of-God truth

Knowledge

He is always there and I know this because

You have always been there too

Talking when all I know

Is silence

And patience when I couldn’t

Open my mouth

Believing in me

Before

I was capable of believing

In myself

The day I was born you say you saw me

And knew I was your little girl

Who you needed to protect

From the world

You started that day and never stopped

And I can feel it every day
