The Bridge

February 11, 2026

Being away from home is like being a bridge.

My foundations sunk in two different rivers.

On one side are the voices of my childhood.

On the other side the promises for tomorrow.

People and cars run through me.

Different languages, different cultures.

I sometimes shake with the wind,

But I do not fall.

My foundation is still strong.

I am not just the space in between;

Both sides belong to me.

Lucía Abascia, 25, is originally from Rosario, Argentina and is currently a pre-nursing student at the College of San Mateo. What began as an elective turned into a passion when she took a creative writing class and fell in love with reading and writing, thanks to the guidance and inspiration of her professor, Emil de Andreis. She wrote “The Bridge,” a piece that explores both the struggles and the beauty of the immigrant experience.
