Ode to Brake Lights

September 2, 2024

Brake lights are so cute. I love them. The city would be ugly without those beautiful red lights coloring the streets.

But then, what about the other lights?

The headlights zooming down the freeway. The traffic lights, red and yellow and green—or even the bright green of the street name signs, shining against the blue-black sky. The street lights that line every sidewalk, no matter how urban or otherwise. The lights reflecting off of street signs: stop, bike lane ahead, 45 miles per hour. The illuminated establishments making up our city: restaurants and businesses. The glow of the Strip, a shimmering gold paradise of towers; I look out my window and wonder if the sun is setting. No, it’s midnight.

No, I can’t say the city would be ugly without its lights. Nor that she would be less loved, but there would be less to love. That’s why I love brake lights.
