“I say now,
you gave what you could”
-Anne Sexton, The Break Away
You gave what you could,
and I gave all I had.
I wish I had the key
to your heart, maybe
I gave you mine too
hastily, too caught up
in the newfound feeling
of love.
I guess I am bitter and
sharp like thistles.
I don’t think we fell apart,
rather— you fell apart,
perhaps at the thought of
having me— however, the
thought of having you, is what’s
been keeping me together.
