I
walk up
a hundred
gravel driveways
in stories I tell
to myself with soft lines
that girls prettier than I
follow, muted hysteria
sticking to their elevated heels
urging them to fall from their steep tiptoes.
They are dancers, these fairy-light girls;
they bound from step to step, graceful
despite the weights on their backs.
Oh, they are almost me
and yet I suspect
that in the end
we will find
different
homes
