Boys Who Don’t Sleep

January 21, 2022

The boys hadn’t arrived yet
When she said from across the table,
“I love boys who don’t sleep at night.”

And the boys came back,
One beside me,
The sleepless one beside her,
And over our coffee mugs
I felt something in my chest take flight.

Maybe we didn’t know what it felt like
For love to be real.
For love to feel like it heals.

But here we stand, falling, flying,
Laughing, crying—
Who can tell the difference?
Sleepless boys, wakeful boys,
We are suddenly fond of the chance to be destroyed.

We can’t see the future,
But we can feel it––
That we will be awake with our loves through the dark
All night memorizing their birthmarks.

Perhaps our happy endings began over coffee––
The chapter one of a story that finally centers
Around our glory.
