Background Music

February 14, 2024

The music plays low in the background, and I feel like I’m glowing; I don’t know if it’s the warmth from the stove that we’re cooking dinner            on, or if it’s because you fill a space in my chest that I didn’t know had been empty.

The music plays low in the background, and I can’t help but gravitate toward you, my hands on your back, your hips, your stomach; you fit         in my grasp like I was always meant to be in your orbit.

The music plays low in the background, and I finally realize what I was missing before, listening to these songs and swaying by myself while I       longed for a girl I hadn’t met yet.

The music plays low in the background, and I think I could do this for the rest of my life—though never believing that I could deserve                       something this good, someone this beautiful.

The music plays low in the background, and I can’t take my eyes off of you, can’t stop watching your every careful move, trying to memorize         every curve, the way your hair floats when you move, how your shoulders curve into your neck and create the valley I want to bury my               head in forever.

The music plays low in the background, and I am in love.

Katelynn Jordan (she/her) is a university student currently completing her Bachelor of Arts in English Literature in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. She loves her cat Fletcher, the way you can take words and create a whole new world, and coffee in any form.
