The story starts long ago
In a tent, there was a little girl
Huddled underneath a blanket
Yet, she couldn’t go to sleep
So you gave her a light show
In the dark, the sky began to glow
And you showed her sights
The city lights would’ve never let her see
Once back home the little girl
Looked through each and every telescope
Looked up each time the moon had risen
For that starry night feeling
But the world is full of light pollution
Cars and buildings cause confusion
So, left with only one solution
The stars retreated
That little girl grew up
A twenty-something-year-old screw up
But she never forgot the night the stars
Sang her to sleep
And everyone says to look ahead
But she chose to look up instead
And hoped and planned for a day
She could greet them properly
One day, far away
In a cold and dark and empty place
She stood still and watched
As the lights began to wake
There was the night sky
She’d been searching for her whole life
And she held back tears in her eyes
As the skies became alive
In a way that words cannot repeat
She laughed because she could not believe
She finally got a chance to see
Your stars again
And if she could, she would’ve
Reached out and grabbed a hold of
A star and wrapped it up
And brought it home
And on the days when
The cars, the buildings, the people
Became too much
And she felt alone
She would unwrap your gift
Because when I see the works of your fingers
The stars, the moon, the heavens you’ve prepared
I don’t feel as scared
I don’t feel alone.
