Footwork

March 24, 2025

her footsteps are lighter today

she didn’t drop her baggage

flop face down on the bed

or sob her frustrations away

he entered with his heavy footsteps

no anger or stress to forget

she sped through the room

and then with a boom

in the air she leapt

and off her feet he swept

the peak of their days meet

their bed creaks

their frame squeaks

their bodies talk

their souls speak

they pad to the bathroom

around the bed

they head to the closet

and lie back down

to revel at the life thus far

they’ve led

other days it’s quiet;

the air is dense

she sits on me

head in her hands

he lays on the bed

no words are uttered but the room is tense

they don’t move but would argue

what are they to do

when the team splits in two

one tip-toes over and lends a shoulder

reassuring that it will be them

regardless of where life lands

Kailani is an amateur writer. She writes for the love of writing. It is her sincerest form of expression—a way to put her wide-ranging ideas and life experiences into something cohesive. As a clinical therapist, she helps others find, listen to, and use their voice. And her writing is her voice. The world as she experiences it is her inspiration, and her love of personal flair fuels her style. She doesn’t think she’s to write the next great American novel, but she’s to write something. Stay curious.
